Planning Guide
Effective
planning of your kitchen begins with trying to identify your needs.
The following is a checklist of information you should consider…..
New Construction:
-
What is the approximate
cost of your home?

Will you be looking to
resale this home in the near future or is it to be your retirement
home?

Is this your first new
home or will you be upgrading?

What is the style of
your home? Traditional, Victorian, Country, or Contemporary?

Do you have a budget
or a certain cost limit to stay within that has alrady been established
for this project? (this will help guide us when looking at accessories
and design options to keep this affordable).

Have you made a decision on the appliances? If not,
you will need to have them chosen prior to planning the kitchen
or shortly after.
Remodel:
- What’s the
reason for the remodel?
Are there any structural changes to be considered, such as moving a
wall, replacing a window or if you currently have soffits would you want
them removed?
Are there enough electrical outlets and do your work surfaces have
enough light?
Can you or are you willing to make some plumbing or lighting changes
if it would make your kitchen function better?
Do you feel you have enough counter top space for your work areas?
What do you like and NOT like about your current kitchen layout?
Do you need more storage space and would you prefer a special spot
for storing flat items such as cookie sheets, pizza pans, etc.?
Do you need a recycling center?
Will you be purchasing all new appliances or use the existing. It is
important to have the dimensions of all your appliances for planning.
If purchasing new
have you started looking at various types and will you be adding any
new ones? You will need to have appliance specifications when designing
your kitchen.
What’s the
style of your interior decorating?
- What’s the
style of your home?
Lifestyle:

Type
of job?

Do
both husband and wife work outside of the home?
Do you have
small children and if so how many?
Are there any special needs for someone that has to be considered?

What’s
your cooking style? Gourmet, Family Style, Quick and Simple, Take
Out, or Baking?
What else will
you be doing in this kitchen…Laundry? Homework? Watching
TV? Paying Bills? Work on the Computer?

Will
you be entertaining guests – if so... how often? Formal
or Informal? Amount of guests on an average basis? Do guests
typically end up in the kitchen?
- Will the kitchen
be used for eating and do you prefer a kitchen table or do you
want to have other seating options?
Future Needs:
Will your
family size be increasing or decreasing?
If you are not replacing
some appliances now do you plan on it in the near furture and
if so do you have an idea on what type you'd be going with?
Are you
remodeling to sell?
Are you
doing a room addition?
Design Style and
Color Choices:
What colors do you
like?
What colors do you
NOT like?

What
type of wood specie do you like and is it important to you
to have it match the type of wood present throughout the rest
of your home such as interior doors, furniture and trimwork?
Do you want to accent
some items in the design with a painted finish, antique distressed
finish or maybe a different stain color?
Are you interested
in having some furniture looks? What type of counter
surfaces do you want...Laminated, Solid Surface, Stone, or
Exotic Wood?
Is it important to you to have a surface that is NSF safe for the food
prep area?
Will your budget
allow the expense of natural stone or solid surface tops? Is it important
to you to have a sink that is either integrated or under-mounted to
the top?
Do you like a raised
panel or flat panel door style and does it fit you home’s style?
Have you gathered notes, photos, products and ideas of what
